At Roots & Reins, we don't believe healing comes from one experience alone. It grows through meaningful relationships, time spent in nature, experiences with horses, opportunities to discover, and the confidence children gain as they overcome new challenges. Each of our programs offers a unique experience, and together, they create an environment where children can feel safe, supported, and empowered to grow at their own pace.

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)

Healing Begins with Relationships

Equine-assisted psychotherapy is a specialized mental health service provided by a licensed therapist in partnership with horses. Unlike riding lessons, the focus is not on riding or horsemanship. Instead, children participate in thoughtfully designed ground-based activities that support emotional growth, communication, confidence, trust, healthy boundaries, and resilience.

Why Horses?

As prey animals, horses have evolved to be exceptionally aware of the emotions and body language of those around them. They respond honestly and without judgment, offering immediate feedback that helps children better understand themselves, recognize their emotions, and strengthen their relationships with others.

Unlike people, horses don’t respond to titles, appearances, or carefully chosen words. They respond to authenticity. That unique quality allows children to practice trust, communication, confidence, and healthy boundaries in a way that often feels natural, safe, and free from judgment.

A typical session may include grooming, leading, observing, or interacting with a horse while working alongside a licensed therapist. Every activity is purposeful and individualized to meet each child’s unique needs and goals.

Equine-assisted psychotherapy helps children strengthen emotional regulation, build self-confidence, improve communication, develop healthier relationships, and reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma when incorporated into treatment with a licensed mental health professional.

Perhaps most importantly, horses have an extraordinary ability to meet children exactly where they are. They don’t expect perfection. They don’t care about grades, diagnoses, or past experiences. They simply respond to what is happening in the present moment, creating opportunities for children to experience trust, confidence, and connection in ways that often feel more natural than traditional office-based therapy.
